My Dream Magazine

Name: The Feminist

Concept: It would be based on my definition of feminism which is “a world view that promotes human rights, with the specific intent of improving the lives of women and girls.” It would cover a variety of topics that women my age would find worth reading about such as: pop-culture, fashion, beauty, entertainment (books, tv, movies...), food, sex, health, celebrities...

Demographics: Women, ages roughly 14-30 years old, all ethnicities, all income levels, targeted towards people who see the issue with the inequality in this world and want to become more aware and self involved.

Competitors: Bitch, Ms., and Off Our Backs are all magazines with feminist perspectives, however, I do not see myself subscribing to any of them. Bitch is critiques of TV, movies, magazines, and advertising, interviews with feminist celebrities and newsmakers, and book reviews. Ms. produces hard-hitting investigative reports and in-depth feminist analysis of national and global issues. Off Our Backs covers contemporary feminist issues, news, ideas, theory and analysis from a distinctly feminist perspective.

My dream magazine would feature all of this information, relative to our consumers, and more! There would never be an issue that was a "dud" because so many things in life need to be called out by feminism or given a feminist perspective while empowering young women to do the same.

Articles:

1. Sexualities, genders, and other terms you should know...

  • I would like this piece to explain to readers the different sexualities and genders and the differences between them. It would bring awareness to the public in a respectful and accurate manner.
2. Why men should call themselves feminists according to Joseph Gordon-Levitt

  • Recently JGL did an interview on Ellen where he discussed feminism and for my pretend magazine I would like there to be a short interview discussing his views.
3. 16 things no one wants to tell you about being a woman

  • A list of things all women should hear. You can find it here
4. Emma Watson's speech at the UN (Watch it here)

  • Emma Watson delivered an inspiring speech about feminism at the United Nations Headquarters in New York yesterday, saying there is a need for more feminists in society and called on men to advocate gender equality. In her speech, Watson described her decision to become a feminist as “uncomplicated,” but that she was shocked to find that society associated it with being “too strong, too aggressive, anti-men, unattractive.”

5. What feminism is today and common misconceptions

  • This piece will discuss the different aspects of feminism from men and women's view points and also viewpoints of people from different races and social standings.

  1. I love your magazine concept and would definitely send in a subscription for it! There aren't a lot of feminist magazines out there aimed toward the newest wave of feminists-this would be awesome!

  2. I admire the uniqueness of your magazine and how each article covers everything a "pro-feminist" would enjoy reading. It interests me to see how the magazine would continue to grow month after month.

  4. Great idea. I agree there's a new wave of feminism in your generation, including the anti-rape movement and men getting onboard. You capture the movement.
