Movies

"Skeleton Twins" directed by Craig Johnson starring Kristin Wiig, Bill Hader, & Luke Wilson.

Out of all the movies I've seen in the past year I would have to say my absolute favorite was "Skeleton Twins" I saw in theaters a few weeks ago. This film is about estranged twins, having both coincidentally cheated death on the same day, reuniting with the possibility of mending their broken relationship. I went to go see this movie because I was familiar with and enjoyed the actors previous comedic roles, but wanted to see their acting capabilities in this dramedy. They were absolutely amazing in expressing their character's struggles and how it shaped their lives. I found it to be the perfect blend of humor and seriousness that this story needed to connect the audience and resonate with them about how life is weird and unexpected with an emphasis on family ties.

"How The Grinch Stole Christmas" directed by Ron Howard starring Jim Carrey

I have absolutely loved this movie since I saw it theaters in 2000 when I was 6 years old. I have grown very attached to it because it is still able to make me smile and laugh even 14 years after I first saw it. Jim Carrey is absolutely brilliant in bringing to life such a well known and beloved cartoon character. I seriously cannot help but get excited and eager to watch it ever December, and even other non-Christmas months!

My Dream Magazine

Name: The Feminist

Concept: It would be based on my definition of feminism which is “a world view that promotes human rights, with the specific intent of improving the lives of women and girls.” It would cover a variety of topics that women my age would find worth reading about such as: pop-culture, fashion, beauty, entertainment (books, tv, movies...), food, sex, health, celebrities...

Demographics: Women, ages roughly 14-30 years old, all ethnicities, all income levels, targeted towards people who see the issue with the inequality in this world and want to become more aware and self involved.

Competitors: Bitch, Ms., and Off Our Backs are all magazines with feminist perspectives, however, I do not see myself subscribing to any of them. Bitch is critiques of TV, movies, magazines, and advertising, interviews with feminist celebrities and newsmakers, and book reviews. Ms. produces hard-hitting investigative reports and in-depth feminist analysis of national and global issues. Off Our Backs covers contemporary feminist issues, news, ideas, theory and analysis from a distinctly feminist perspective.

My dream magazine would feature all of this information, relative to our consumers, and more! There would never be an issue that was a "dud" because so many things in life need to be called out by feminism or given a feminist perspective while empowering young women to do the same.

4. Emma Watson's speech at the UN (Watch it here)

  • Emma Watson delivered an inspiring speech about feminism at the United Nations Headquarters in New York yesterday, saying there is a need for more feminists in society and called on men to advocate gender equality. In her speech, Watson described her decision to become a feminist as “uncomplicated,” but that she was shocked to find that society associated it with being “too strong, too aggressive, anti-men, unattractive.”

5. What feminism is today and common misconceptions

  • This piece will discuss the different aspects of feminism from men and women's view points and also viewpoints of people from different races and social standings.

Books

I'm almost twenty years old and in my short life time I have read hundreds of books. They're like crack to me. Once I get started on something good I just. can't. stop. However, out of all the books I've read the three that had the most impact on me were:

1. The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

Shel Silverstein was my absolute favorite author as a kid. His writings inspired me to get creative and at a young age I started to doodle and write short stories as well as poetry thanks to him. The Giving Tree was such an influential book to me (and probably many others when they were young) because it was so simple that children could understand it and love it; his writing was effortless but still conveyed the strong message of selfless love and friendship.

2.  The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

I had to read this book in my seventh grade language arts class. I remember we started to read it as a class, but I got so sucked in I started reading faster and the spent all of lunch and all of after school reading until I finished it. And then I read it again. I had never read something like this before; the main event is murder but more importantly it is about right and wrong in society and everyone's socioeconomic differences and what we all have in common as human beings.

3. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

I just recently read this book, unaware it was being made into a movie, and I think it was probably the best book I've ever read. It has so many twists and thrilling moments, as a reader you can't help but devour it in a matter of days. Gone Girl is the story of Nick and Amy whose marriage, like many,  is full of lies, malice, sex, betrayal, love, and two bedazzlingly different sides of a story. You never really know how everything is going to turn out until the very last page and it is epic.
